Description
In this homeschool-friendly class, students will engage in reading and discussion about the impact of geography on the modern world. This is a great opportunity to see how geography, politics, economics, history, and current events connect! Bestselling author Tim Marshall suggests that geography shapes war, power, politics, economics, and social development within every state on the globe. Do you agree? His book, "Prisoners of Geography," examines these connections.
Students will read a chapter each week, and supplement that reading with a variety of videos and other readings to round out their knowledge. In addition, students are offered the opportunity to complete an opinion-based written response based on that homework. In class, we engage in a lively discussion about the country, its geography, and about Marshall's suggestions as to how that geography impacts the history and the future of the country. Students can expect 1-2 hours of homework per week, and are expected to come to class prepared to contribute (via voice or via chat).
Homeschooling families may find that this class meets state requirements for Geography, or for Modern World History (the book is frequently used in AP Human Geography classes). Students may take the class graded or ungraded. Students completing the class for a grade are expected to complete written work, and to participate in class regularly.
