Get creative with Scratch programming! Learn to compose sound effects, music, and beats with Scratch's block-based coding platform. Use computer science concepts to program with sound!

This class is great for beginning programmers and also has extension ideas for learners who are familiar with Scratch and other block-based coding platforms.

Class 1 - Introduction and Discovery

  • Learn how to access Scratch by having a parent help create an account or by downloading Scratch 3.0 on your computer, with a guardian's permission.

  • Learn about blocks and block-based coding.

Class 2 - Your First Musical Program

  • Learn to use Sprites, blocks, and backgrounds

  • Use loops and inputs to create an interactive dance party.

Class 3 - DJ Mixer

  • Explore loops and variables to create your own beats!

  • Count musical rhythms and explore timing.

Class 4 - Music Video

  • Animate a music video to match the mood of your songs.

Class 5 - Dance Party

  • Create custom sound effects for games or add effects to your music video.

Class 6 - Interactive Instruments

  • Code an interactive instrument using inputs and real musical notes. 

Class 7 - Sight Reading Game

  • Learn about musical notation and sight reading while coding an interactive flash card game or animation.

Class 8 - Compose a Song

  • Use musical tools in Scratch to compose your own music.

Class 9 - Virtual Recital

  • Share your musical programs and compositions in a virtual recital

  • Learn about remixing and giving credit.

Materials

Students will be using a computer and can choose from Scratch Online (make an account with parent permission) or Scratch 3.0, which does not require an account.
