Description

Taught by a published author! Students generally know not to plagiarize, but often aren't entirely clear on what, exactly, plagiarism is. We'll break it down in this quick, four-video lesson series!

The lines between plagiarism, parody, homage, excerpt, and fanfiction are a bit blurry in our everyday lives: YouTube videos featuring songs with the lyrics slightly changed, companies use Chat GPT to write blog posts, fanfiction posted on popular internet sites, and excerpts of news stories posted on social media. This class seeks to help students understand what, exactly, plagiarism is, and how they can avoid it in both the creative and academic world!

We'll start at the most basic level of plagiarism--copy/pasting something into your own work without citation-- and build up to discussing intricacies like the concept of Fair Use.

While this class is self-paced, students are encouraged to reach out to the teacher with questions about specific situations, real or theoretical! The goal is not to shame those who might have plagiarized before, but rather to clear up any misconceptions they may have and give them the tools to avoid doing so in the future.

Please note that this class does not cover specific citation rules, but rather, serves as a primer on plagiarism in general! The teacher is also available (even after class ends!) for any specific use case questions about plagiarism. There is no specific homework given for this class.
