Description

This is an ongoing class that meets once a week for multiple weeks with no current end date. Enroll for one session OR set the number of sessions you want your student to attend OR select 'no end date', then stop your subscription easily anytime.

When we become better listeners and can listen for details when following directions, it helps us in a multitude of areas including: our ability to communicate effectively, criticial thinking, management of our emotions, social skills, study skills, time management for daily life skills, as well as, complete school work / homework correctly and better prepare for tests and so much more!

Do your learners have difficulty actually listening to what they hear? Do they remember details? Do they sometimes get frustrated trying to complete tasks? In this ongoing class, each week we will focus on the importance of listening with understanding for details and practice those skills. If they become frustrated during a lesson, we will learn calming methods to help improve focus and patience. This class is for 9-12 year olds.

Each week we will discuss using listening skills in different situations and the difference between hearing and listening. Next, students will practice using their ability to listen for detail by following the teachers verbal step-by-step instructions to complete sequential paper and pencil type activities. Accuracy will be checked prior to initiating each step and after each step is completed. Students will be told to listen carefully for details the first and second time each instruction is given, but they will also be encouraged to ask for a repetition if needed.

Some weeks brain fitness games will be included. ***Occasionally these exercises will involve minimal physical activity such as balancing on one foot. Therefore learners should have a chair or sturdy piece of furniture to hold on to for balance when needed.*** If your learner is unable to participate in brain fitness games involving physical movement, please let me know prior to class.

Each session will involve the same type of verbal and written activities class. The content each week is not dependent on knowledge of content from the previous week. Sessions do not build on each other. We will complete a different set of directions each week. Enroll at anytime to join us to practice following directions and improve brain fitness!

Neurodivergency Specializations and Accommodations

This class is geared toward learners of all types. For those with neurodivergencies, both diagnosed and suspected, I'd like to share my credentials, experience and a general overview of how I help them feel comfortable and successful in my classroom. Whether your learner has a neurodivergency or not, please contact me with questions for more specific information related to your child so you can make the most informed decision.

I have experience both professionally and as a parent. My M.S. degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences (Speech-Language Pathology) as well as past Master's level certification in special education (for N-12th grade) gave me training to work with many neurodivergencies. However, over 34 years and counting of experience in public and private schools and online teaching helping these sweet learners (I know ... sometimes it can be a challenge☺️) as well as homeschooling my own children some of those years, has helped me to learn even better how to help them. Each learner is unique, as are all of us. I have learned what works for one doesn't always work for another, so I adjust to best help each individual. I have taught many learners individually as well as in groups of a mix of neurodivergent and non-neurodiveregent learners in person and online.

Experience with my own daughter, and something I learned years ago when she was 4, helped me help her and has also helped me help others. It was a process and work over the years, and learning how to help her gave me insight as a parent and what we go through to find what best helps our own children. Today she is a happy and successful adult.

In addition to my experience, I have taken many additional classes over the years to help me become a better educator and have learned about methods, accomodations and materials I've implemented to help my learners even more. A certification I received about 9 years ago is as an Interactive Metronome (IM) Provider. IM is a computer based brain training tool I sometimes utilize with my learners who see me independently in person or online. I also discovered non-computerized brain training tools as well that I use with my with my independent learners alone or in conjunction with IM. Although I'm not able to use IM with my Outschool learners, I do utilize the non-computerized brain training tools with success with them. I saw a very positive shift in my students when I began implementing brain training, both as a stand alone training and as a supplement to other methods I use.

I have worked with many children and teens with diagnosed or suspected ADD / ADHD, those on the autism spectrum, anxiety, auditory processing difficulties / disorder, down syndrome, dyslexia, speech and/or language differences / disorders and many more.

As I teach, I adjust to help these learners as well as learners who may need or want more challenge. I like to make my classes engaging and fun while maintaining a balance to help students focus and learn. I have found that patient encouragement in a structured and energetic yet relaxed classroom environment helps a learner's brain focus to receive information better. Not only does working on listening skills help but also the brain training I incorporate into this class has helped learners of all types including those with the neurodivergenies I mentioned and many more. These skills and training are of benefit to all of us

When you let me know about your concerns and/or goals for your child, whether there is a diagnosed neurodivergency or suspected or none, I can give more information on how I can help your child. Along with the information you provide, once I have a session or two with your learner, I can give you more specific information on a plan to help us make progress towards your goals for your child.

If you have questions, please contact me here through IndyEd first.
