The 'Scraps to Art' Project is a project based learning Environmental Stewardship and Entrepreneurial Activity focused on recycling/upcycling/repurposing/design for students in grades 4-7. Any or all of the pages in the pdf file can be printed and used for students across a wide range of ages/skills, or collaboratively with kids of different ages.

Depending on your student’s needs, scaffolding time studying the environmental effects of plastic may be useful, including vocabulary. Scaffolding can be done at any stage throughout the project as needed.

Motivating Question: "How can we transform everyday scraps into artistic, useful, and eco-friendly creations to design an inspiring space for creativity and community engagement?”

Learning Outcomes: The Scraps to Art project is a Project-Based Learning (PBL) activity that integrates multiple subject areas, providing a comprehensive learning experience for students. This project is designed to incorporate English Language Arts, design and research skills, artistic expression, critical and creative thinking with environmental stewardship.

The project has a total of 19 activities, which can be conveniently printed and organized into a binder or stapled together. Students are encouraged to utilize various resources, including the internet, textbooks, maps, and peer collaboration, to successfully complete the project. Each student will create a unique project and will present their findings, allowing peers to benefit from their discoveries. Objective: The primary objective is for students to apply upcycling principles to design a multifunctional eco-creative space that incorporates both artistic and sustainable elements. Students will learn to integrate environmental awareness into their creative and entrepreneurial business decision-making process.

Student Decision-Making: Students will be empowered to make decisions regarding the layout, design, purpose, community involvement, and functionality of the eco-creative space. They will decide on the types of scraps and materials to be used, ensuring that their choices align with sustainability, business and community engagement goals.

Student Inquiry: Through inquiry-based learning, students will explore different upcycling techniques, and seek creative solutions to design challenges. The project encourages students to ask questions about the lifecycle of materials and the broader implications of their creative decisions.

Feedback: Students will have a chance to reflect on the project and what they would do differently as a process of self directed learning.

Published Product: Students will be able to choose from several final projects including product design, website building, design challenge, or a community involvement project.
