This class is being offered through Outschool in the fall of 2024. 

We will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:00 pm-12:45 pm Central Time beginning on September 9 through January 22, 2024. 

I encourage students to form friendships and consider the math class as a learning pod since I teach up to Level 6B. Students could progress through each level together. 

This course is limited to 6 students per group. This ensures individualized attention, ample opportunities for practice, time for questions and review of homework. 

Welcome to the Singapore Dimensions Math Series!  

Step right into the world of math exploration where learning becomes an adventure!  In this interactive and fun Dimensions Math series, we're not just about numbers; we're about mastering the magic of mathematical thinking.

The Dimensions Math series is designed to help students learn math by using concrete images, then pictures, and finally moving to the abstract. Students will learn to think mathematically and rely on learning how to 'do maths', not just memorize math facts. If you are unsure of the level of your learner, please take the Diagnostic Assessment class or review the placement tests on the Singapore Math website.

• Introduction of Topic: Dive into lessons from the textbook 
• Multi-modal Learning: Engage through text, video, interactive games, note writing, stories, and lively discussions.

CLASS EXPECTATIONS 

• Video On, Please!: Let's keep those videos on for a more connected and interactive experience.
• Show What You Know: Every student has a chance to showcase their knowledge in their preferred way.
• Take a Break: Need a breather? Feel free to turn off your sound and video until you're ready to rejoin.
• Parental Support: Parents, stay off-screen but you can be nearby for any needed assistance.

LESSON PLANNING

Each class will offer a mini-lesson, a review of homework, an opportunity for questions, and in-class practice. Students should bring their textbook, workbook, and a notebook with their pencil to each class. I recommend a notebook that has graph paper and lined paper (blank paper does not work well for most learners).

This course is appropriate for both students with or without disabilities (at grade level). Activities may be modified as needed for students needing additional wait time, using alternate communication devices, or those who have difficulty accessing printed material or difficulty in writing. 

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Use numbers to one million
• Use addition and subtraction within one million
• Multiples and factors and prime numbers
• Multiply by 1 digit; multiply by 2 digit; and use mental math for multiplication and division
• Divide 4-digit numbers
• Create equivalent fractions; improper fractions
• Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers
• Multiply a fraction and a whole number
• Use line graphs and line plots.

Students must have their own copy of the Textbook Level 4A and Workbook Level 4A to participate in this class. Please order early as shipping times can be longer than expected. I have also included the link for the preferred Math Notebook.

Math Notebook

As mentioned in my profile, I am a former Special Education teacher with a Masters in Teaching and a Masters in Social Work. My family includes autistics, other neurodivergencies, as well as physical disabilities and chronic issues. I also have ADHD. I have extensive experience in offering flexible teaching strategies to best fit the needs of the student while presenting the core content. If something is not working for a student, I will try another way. I see all behavior as communication and seek to understand rather than control the experience. 

Activities may be modified as needed for students needing additional wait time, using alternate communication devices, those who have difficulty accessing printed material or difficulty in writing. 

For those with reading challenges: material may be read out loud or be presented visually in charts, graphs or pictures. Graphic organizers will be offered to help remember strategies. 

For those with writing challenges: recommended math notebook includes graph paper which is best for lining up numbers. Answers may also be presented verbally or in pictures. Answers may be dictated and then copied into own notebook to "show" progress.

For those that need extra processing time: material is scaffolded for a variety of learners. Calculators can be used when the focus is on building strategies. Teaching style follows the "I do, we do, you do" method. Students are guided in the "we do" stage and do not need to demonstrate mastery in order to progress. I seek for students to show progress, not perfection.
