Description
This course builds on skills obtained in a rigorous French 1 course, and assumes competence with basic vocabulary and a wide variety of regular and irregular verbs in the present tense. A placement test or interview is required in order to join the class, especially for those who wish to join mid-year. (The class began in August).
French 2 begins with a review of present tense, incorporating idiomatic expressions along with common vocabulary themes. Next, the students learn the passé composé and then the imparfait verb tenses. Throughout these units context is provided and students read and tell stories in the past tense. The course also covers reflexive verbs in present and past tense, incorporated into stories and conversations about daily activities. Other grammatical structures are object pronouns, commands, and the futur simple tense. Vocabulary will be centered around daily life, vacations & travel, health & medicine, music, art, movies, and theater. Comprehensible input is provided for listening and reading practice, and students are challenged to use what they know to speak and write each week. Cultural themes are also included.
Classes meet on Zoom and are recorded so that students can review or catch up if they are absent. Students can expect 3 hours of independent work each week, including assessments. Some assessments will need to be proctored by parents.
