ONLINE BIOLOGY CLASS DESCRIPTION
Welcome to one of the most advanced classes we offer at Next Level Homeschool—a comprehensive, full-year biology program designed for serious students. This comprehensive online high school course is an intense and extensive coverage of all major biology concepts, ensuring students are well-prepared for AP or college-level biology. Many former students have even reported that they learned more in this class than in their college biology courses!
As a Marine Biology graduate from Texas A&M University at Galveston, I have always had a deep passion for the field, and love sharing and instilling that passion in my students as well. Biology is a core science, and teaching it is a significant responsibility that I take very seriously. I am committed to providing an in-depth, academic approach to the subject while still allowing the students to have fun and express their creativity and talents through our weekly hands on projects.
This session will cover the following key topics. Full syllabus and optional lab materials on our website.
- Characteristics of Living Things: What defines life?
- Biochemistry: Exploring the chemical properties of life, the role of carbon, and how chemical reactions sustain living organisms.
- Ecology: Understanding the interactions between living things and their environment, including energy flow through ecosystems such as food webs, the carbon cycle, and the nitrogen cycle.
- Ecosystems: Examining the major ecosystems on Earth, the biotic and abiotic factors that define them, inter-organism interactions, and ecosystem dynamics over time.
- Populations: Analyzing the characteristics and growth factors of populations, understanding biodiversity, and differentiating it from population dynamics.
GENERAL BIOLOGY CLASS FORMAT
Classes are asynchronous. No live meetings. View lessons on your schedule within the designated timeframe (2 weeks to complete each lesson plan). Expect 1.5-2.5 hours to work through the lesson plan each week, and an additional 2-5 hours working on assignments (depending on the chosen assignment and time management skills).
Each lesson includes a fully narrated PowerPoint presentation, complete with images and videos to enhance the learning experience. Students will use our learning management system, Canvas, to access their lessons, print worksheets, take quizzes, view and submit assignments, participate in discussions, and check grades and feedback
