Description
Welcome to our Kindergarten and First Grade Small Reading Group!
In this class, we'll meet three times a week to learn early reading skills including:
Letter Names and Sounds
We'll begin the semester learning letter names and letter sounds. This will help us later as we begin blending letters into words.
Phonemic Awareness
This skill is important for early reading as children need to learn to identify the individual sounds they hear in words before they start reading.
Phonics
We'll learn a new phonics skill each week. Early phonics skills include alphabet recognition, reading CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, and learning high frequency words.
Reading Comprehension
We'll read short decodable passages later in the semester and answer reading comprehension questions about what we read to practice comprehension skills.
Spelling
We'll listen to the sounds we hear in words and practice spelling words together using sound boxes. Spelling skills help develop early reading skills as well!
We will learn a new skill each week, review skills we've learned, and practice reading decodable passages together to improve our early reading skills. We'll play phonics games and do activities that build our early literacy skills.
Your learner will have the opportunity to practice reading in a small group, get support from an encouraging teacher, and engage with other learners in the class. Class size is kept between 2-4 students to give all students a chance to participate in the class.
