Description
This five star class has been offered on Outschool for two years! Please contact me through my website to set up a class time for your learner. All classes will be held virtually on Zoom.
Prior to our first class, we will discuss the reading goals for your learner. Class content will be selected based on your learner's reading level, interests, and goals. The class can be adjusted weekly to meet your learner's needs. Books and short stories will be provided. Please let me know if your learner has a book preference, and I will do my best to accommodate their request. I do not have a formal assessment to determine your learner's reading level.
As your learner reads, I will offer gentle guidance, encouragement, and corrections as necessary. We will pause to discuss and check for reading comprehension. If there are specific sounds or letters that require additional practice, I provide a review using a fun game at the beginning of each class.
Learner Reading Requirements
- Learners should be familiar with basic letter sounds.
- Learners should be prepared to combine letter sounds to create CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant).
Teaching Style
- I am an extremely patient and encouraging teacher.
- I adjust my teaching methods to suit each learner.
- I will utilize props or visuals when necessary.
- Errors will be corrected in a positive way.
Neurodivergency Specializations and Accommodations
As a mom of two sons with ADHD, I know to offer patience and redirection throughout class. I will find ways to help keep your learner focused on the material. I always strive to find books that interest them. If needed, I break larger pages into parts to keep it from feeling overwhelming. We also can switch between books or games to maintain interest.
The techniques I utilize for all students work well for those with dyslexia. I can provide leveled decodable readers in class. New sounds, blends, digraphs, and sight words are introduced slowly. This helps keep it from becoming overwhelming. As we read, I can divide words into parts, show the root word, or rewrite the word larger and more spaced out so it is easier to read.
