Short Summary
Class Information
Availability
This is a group class. Times vary from semester to semester, based on the availability and needs of the group. Please reach out if you have a specific time preference, and I will add that to my list as I plan future sections!
Description
In this learner-led weekly book club, students will share with the class a book they are currently reading! Each learner will get to share what they enjoy about the book they brought to class, including things like their favorite character, the setting of the book, the genre, etc. This class will be very interactive, and learners will be encouraged to ask thoughtful questions of their peers to learn more about why they love the book they are reading. In this way, learners will also improve their interpersonal skills by learning to ask meaningful questions to learn about another person's interests!
AGE/READING LEVEL: This class is designed for learners ages 6-10 years old who are reading independently, regardless of the reading level. Students may be at various reading levels and still benefit from thoughtful literary discussion with their peers.
DISCLAIMER: Students are allowed to choose just about any book to share within this social club. However, books that contain graphic violence and/or sexual content will not be allowed in this group, due to the age of the learners. If you have a question about a book being permissible to discuss in this group, please reach out privately ahead of time.
Neurodivergency Specializations and Accommodations
ADHD, Anxiety, Dyslexia
Nothing listed below is a specific "accommodation" for the above listed neurodivergencies. However, they are best practices that I implement for all learners, which happen to prove very helpful for learners with ADHD, Anxiety, and Dyslexia, in particularly. Please reach out with any questions about specific accommodations you would like to request for your learner!
All learners are welcome in this book club! It is structured in a way that neurodivergent learners will feel welcomed, included, and appreciated for exactly who they are and what they contribute to the group dynamic. Because there is no assigned reading, learners are able to choose books that are of high interest to them and at a reading level that feels comfortable to them, and they are able to do their reading outside of class time, which lowers pressure and (potential) anxiety. Additionally, all learners are given the freedom to communicate verbally or through written form in the class chat.
