GooGenius Draw Club

Draw Club offers online (Zoom) weekly, fundamental drawing classes packaged in month-long themes for ages K-12. Draw Club is an offering of GooGenius (The Cartoon Company), located in Michigan and owned by Wade and Eva Marie Gugino. Classes are taught by Mr Wade, a professional cartoonist who's been doing drawing workshops in schools and universities since 1990. Draw Club began as local in-person classes in 2013 and pivoted to online classes in 2020. We are available everywhere. You get better at drawing by drawing regularly. We give students a safe, fun community to explore their illustration skills. We have three main offerings for students...

Super Sketchers (1hr per week, Basic Drawing for Ages 8-15): We learn techniques (like character development, expression, posing, action, shading, page layout, framing, perspective, camera angles, texture, inking) and explore lots of drawing styles (like manga, comic book art, classic illustration, cartooning, realism). Classes are live and feature step-by-step drawing for three weeks, followed by a Studio Project (recorded session) to use our imagination and apply our newly learned skills on our own drawings (there is a step-by-step option in the video if needed). Students receive a Zoom link and a template to print each week a couple days before class.

Starting Sketchers (1/2hr per week, Foundational Drawing for Ages 5-8): We couple drawing with social skills for this youngest Draw Club. Built around a set of fun characters, we draw people, animals, objects and imaginary things. We focus on the simplest fundamentals, and we have two template options...one to draw, and one to just color if step-by-step drawing is too hard for your child. Three weeks are live followed by a recorded Studio Project week (step-by-step drawing on video). Students receive a Zoom link and templates to print each week a couple days before class.

Story Sketchers (Graphic Story Drawing for Ages 12-18): Draw four page graphic stories every month! The best way to improve your graphic storytelling is draw and finish graphic stories. Each week we tackle something new (perspective, spread layout, detailed eyes, mood, flow, word choice, backgrounds, character style) as we create another page of our fun four-page story. Stories vary in drawing style. Three weeks are live, step-by-step, and the fourth week is a recorded Studio Project week with instructions on how to finish the story my way, or dig deep and finish it your way.  Students receive a Zoom link and a template to print each week a couple days before class.

Supplies: Draw Club supplies are minimal. Pencil, eraser, basic colored pencils (or crayons or markers), a couple of ink markers (fine and medium tip), and a way to print the weekly template.

Collect your weekly drawings and Studio Projects for your future portfolio. Videos of the class are posted to YouTube when live classes are finished, so you never have to miss a week if you can't make the live session.
