Description

Do you need to learn Algebra 1 but hate Algebra?

Or maybe Pre-Algebra was easy and you are ready for a challenge?

If either of those describe you, then this is YOUR class!

In this year-long, 36 week class, we will complete Algebra 1. This is a self-paced class, so there are no live meetings. Students will be assigned 5 tasks to do each week, with videos provided for each new concept. Access to the course begins in September 2024, and students will have a full year to complete the material.

Videos will be recorded by me and will be taught and created using an I Do, We Do, You Do approach. Students will have plenty of practice in each concept, and several weeks will include differentiated practice targeted towards all different levels of student mastery, so regardless of where your student falls, they will get the practice and support they need!

Because this is a full-year Algebra 1 course, students will be expected to put in the time to complete the work and turn in assignments, just like in a real class. Students will be given quizzes to assess learning, with a test at the end of every unit, quarter, and semester.  All assignments will be housed on Canvas.

So, what does Algebra 1 cover? This class will cover the following concepts:

  • Unit 1: Foundations: Reviews arithmetic operations with whole numbers, integers, fractions, and decimals, to give the student a solid base that will support their study of algebra.

  • Unit 2: Solving Linear Equations and Inequalities: Students learn to verify a solution of an equation, solve equations using the Subtraction and Addition Properties of Equality, solve equations using the Multiplication and Division Properties of Equality, solve equations with variables and constants on both sides, use a general strategy to solve linear equations, solve equations with fractions or decimals, solve a formula for a specific variable, and solve linear inequalities.

  • Unit 3: Math Models: Once students have learned the skills needed to solve equations, they apply these skills to solve word and number problems.

  • Unit 4: Graphs: Covers the rectangular coordinate system, which is the basis for most consumer graphs. Students learn to plot points on a rectangular coordinate system, graph linear equations in two variables, graph with intercepts, understand slope of a line, use the slope-intercept form of an equation of a line, find the equation of a line, and create graphs of linear inequalities.

  • Unit 5: Systems of Linear Equations: Covers solving systems of equations by graphing, substitution, and elimination; solving applications with systems of equations, solving mixture applications with systems of equations, and graphing systems of linear inequalities.

  • Unit 6 : Polynomials: Students learn how to add and subtract polynomials, use multiplication properties of exponents, multiply polynomials, use special products, divide monomials and polynomials, and understand integer exponents and scientific notation.

  • Unit 7: Factoring: Students explore the process of factoring expressions and see how factoring is used to solve certain types of equations.

  • Unit 8: Rational Expressions and Equations: Students work with rational expressions, solve rational equations, and use them to solve problems in a variety of applications.

  • Unit 9: Roots and Radicals: Students are introduced to and learn to apply the properties of square roots, and extend these concepts to higher order roots and rational exponents.

  • Unit 10: Quadratic Equations: Students study the properties of quadratic equations, solve and graph them. They also learn how to apply them as models of various situations.
