Description

I am a fully independent educator running my classes (hosted on Teachable) through my own website.

This class is part of the Tween and Teen Book Club series that's offered each year from September-May. Each month, we read a different book and meet at the end of the month for a discussion. Along the way, learners work independently on Reading Guides, Writing/Vocabulary Exercises, Supplemental Resources, and Discussion Board posts.

There are also Final Project options with an included rubric for giving at-home feedback. You can also choose to add a Feedback Add-On (while space remains) to get video feedback on a rough draft and written feedback on a final draft of the Final Project.

Mark Twain's classic tale of boyhood, adventure, and the growing sense that the world isn't fair has stood the test of time for a reason!

Join us to read this powerful take.

Note: It's highly recommended that participants also join the May Teen Book Club to read James, a modern version of this story told through Jim's eyes.

How Book Clubs Work

Participation in the live book club includes access to a set of resources and activities as well as interactive components.

Participants receive

  • A suggested reading schedule
  • PDF reading guides with comprehension questions
  • Vocabulary/reading activities
  • Discussion board posts in our online classroom
  • Writing/multimodal project prompts related to the reading
  • An invitation to a live discussion
  • A recording of the summary of the live discussion
  • An optional feedback add-on for the final paper/project
  • Rubrics for at-home feedback

Families are welcome to use as much or as little of the suggested resources and activities as they'd like to fit their interest and schedules.

Live Discussion

We'll meet live for an interactive one-hour discussion at the end of the month. If you can't make it, there will be a recorded summary available about 10 days after the class meeting.

Class Details

Age Range: 13-18

Class Size: Additional sections of the live meeting open up depending on enrollments. I am to keep live meetings under 15 participants to ensure everyone gets a chance to participate.

Supplies

To participate successfully in class, learners will need the following:

  • A copy of the book Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Norton Critical Edition) (ISBN: 978-0393284164)
    1. Borrowed, audio, and used formats are fine.
    2. IMPORTANT: Please be sure to get the NORTON CRITICAL EDITION of this text. We'll be reading the contextual essays as well as the original text.
  • Zoom account for live session
  • Microphone and camera for live session
  • PDF reader
  • Access to printer recommended

Time Commitment

This is a very flexible class. Some participants just read the book and show up for the live session. Others do all of the Reading Guides, Activities, Supplemental Resources, and Final Project, creating a robust set of assignments suitable for part of a literature class. (If you are looking for a full semester of literature, I would recommend selecting a book each month and completing all materials.)

This class is designed to be an affordable, flexible way to get more in-depth reading into your schedule. You can do as much or as little as fits into your schedule and needs!

Not the Right Book?

If you're interested in a monthly Book Club but don't think this is quite the right book for your needs, check out my user profile to see other options throughout the 2024-2025 school year!
