Description

Arithmetic and Applications is designed to be an onramp into junior high mathematics, reinforcing and extending elementary math skills. Learners will calculate with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, and negative numbers. They will also use logical, geometric, and statistical reasoning, and solve simple algebraic equations. All these skills will be applied to problem solving.

Learners will study these topics, through the year:

  • Problem Solving and Graphs

    • Basic logic problems

    • Problem solving strategies

    • Review of whole number place value and calculations

    • Scatter plots

    • Coordinate graphing in quadrant 1

  • Decimal Calculations and Angles

    • Decimal place value

    • Decimal addition and subtraction

    • Problem solving with money using addition and subtraction, such as totals and change

    • Measuring angles

    • Angle types

    • Angle sums (around a point, straight line, in a triangle)

    • Classifying triangles

  • More Decimal Calculations and Patterns

    • Multiplying and dividing decimals

    • Problem solving with money using multiplication and division, such as bulk and unit pricing

    • Pattern analysis

    • Multiples of numbers

  • Area, Perimeter, and Fractions

    • Perimeter as total of sides

    • Area of rectangles and triangles

    • Decomposing compound shapes

    • Estimating irregular shapes

    • Visual models of fractions

    • Converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers

  • Collecting Data and Calculations

    • Types of data (qualitative, quantitative, discrete, continuous)

    • Data collection and visualization

    • Intuitive idea of hypotheses/claims

    • Review all calculations with whole numbers and decimals and apply in problem solving

  • Patterns, Time, and Negative Numbers

    • Number sequences

    • Geometric figure sequences

    • Number patterns containing sequences

    • Clock reading and number patterns in clocks

    • Time conversion (time zones, 12/24 hour time)
