Classic Astronomy Class Information

Astronomy is the oldest science, rooted in humanity’s fascination with the cosmos. Ancient civilizations studied the sun’s rise and set, the changing phases of the moon, and the seasonal appearance of constellations. This rich history connects us to figures like Noah, Abraham, and Solomon. Did you know that ancient Egyptians accurately measured the year down to the hour? This course aims to revive the astronomical knowledge that many possessed before the modern age of artificial light, clocks, and printed calendars.
The Astronomy Lab takes place outdoors, where students will engage in various observational assignments focused on the sun, moon, and stars. Activities will include measuring, plotting, and simply locating celestial objects. As we explore the movement of these bodies, we’ll uncover their significance and impact on our lives.
Teacher: Lt. Col. Gene Doremus
