Description
This is a weekly, ongoing class offering individual tuition for students in explicit grammar instruction using the workbooks of Sadlier School's "Grammar Workshop: Tools for Writing". As the title suggests, students' understanding of the rules and principles of grammar greatly benefits the development of their writing skills. Consequently, I have found these lessons to be super useful for both first- and second-language (ESL) students.
I work with Levels Green, Orange, and Blue, which cover Grades 2 to 6. Each book is comprised of six units, and each unit has around seven to nine lessons followed by a unit review. Each lesson has a direct instruction component, followed by practice and application with speaking and writing tasks.
Here is an overview of the learning objectives covered:
Unit 1: Sentences, including kinds of sentences, subjects and predicates (both simple and complete), compound and complex sentences, correcting fragments and run-ons.
Unit 2: Nouns, including common and proper, singular and plural, irregular plural, and possessive.
Unit 3: Verbs, including action, present-tense, past-tense, future-tense, linking, main and helping, irregular, and contractions with not.
Unit 4: Adjectives, articles and demonstrative adjectives, comparatives and superlatives, adverbs, conjunctions (coordinating, subordinating, and correlative).
Unit 5: Pronouns, including subject, object, possessive and demonstrative, relative, and contractions with pronouns.
Unit 6: Capitalization, punctuation and spelling.
Upon request, I will assign weekly homework and mark each lesson to monitor students' progress.
All sessions will be personalized to support the attainment of students' individual academic goals. I aim to foster a relaxed, positive, patient, and supportive environment in my classes, where each student feels safe, valued, and recognized.
I am a qualified teacher with a degree in English Literature and Poetry. I have over sixteen years in teaching experience, and have been a private online tutor for the past five years. I also have a TEFL qualification which I obtained many years ago (in 1997!), and welcome all ESL students.
