Description
This is a 1:1 weekly, ongoing class offering individual tuition for students as we develop our vocabulary base, reading comprehension, and critical-thinking skills through the enriching lessons of the Wordly Wise series. If you have not yet heard of this learning program, I have used Wordly Wise for several years now with my students (including my own children!), and highly recommend it as a valuable resource to strengthen and extend your child's skills in both English and cross-curricular learning.
I work with Books 2 through to 12. Generally, these books correlate with a student's grade level, although they can be lower or higher depending on the individual student. Each book is comprised of fifteen to twenty lessons, and each lesson has two main components, namely a vocabulary and a comprehension section, focused on a word list of ten to fifteen words.
Key objectives during these sessions include learning the parts of speech and definitions for each word; developing a greater awareness of the nuances of different words; being able to use and apply this vocabulary in different contexts; reading fluency and comprehension; and continuing to develop the skills required to help facilitate our understanding and analysis of different texts -- in both written and verbal form. This includes learning how to annotate text by identifying key information in the passage and recording comments for a deeper understanding of the text.
I will assign weekly homework and provide marking and feedback for each lesson to monitor students' progress.
All sessions will be personalized to support the attainment of students' individual academic goals. I aim to foster a relaxed, positive, patient, and supportive environment in my classes, where each student feels safe, valued, and recognized.
I am a qualified teacher with a degree in English Literature and Poetry. I have over sixteen years in teaching experience, and have been a private online tutor for the past five years. I also have a TEFL qualification which I obtained many years ago (in 1997!), and welcome all ESL students.
