Description
This is a weekly, ongoing class offering individual tuition for advanced students to develop their comprehension skills by analyzing a variety of rich and engaging complex texts. If you have not yet heard of this learning program, I have used Sadlier School's "Close Reading of Complex Texts" for several years now with my students (including my own children!), and highly recommend it as a meaningful resource to extend your child's critical-thinking and analytical skills in both English and cross-curricular learning.
I work with Books 4 through to 8. Generally, these books correlate with a student's grade level, although they can be lower or higher depending on the individual student. Each book is comprised of eight to ten units; and each unit has a visual text and two written texts from a range genres, which are thematically linked by an overarching focus question. We will analyze these texts through first, second, and third readings, where each time we delve a little deeper into our analysis. We will use scaffolded analysis prompts to learn how to annotate text effectively, how to record useful notes to aid our comprehension, and how to use self-monitoring strategies to reflect on our understanding of the text. Each text also has a set of comprehension questions, which provide the opportunity for students to practice composing their written responses with accuracy and clarity, and how to cite evidence from the text where needed. At the end of each unit, we will practice synthesizing our analysis of the three texts and composing a written piece in response to the focus question. I am sure this sounds like a bit of a mouthful, but each component of the unit is so well thought-out, and contributes to a wonderfully holistic approach for developing literary analysis skills.
I will assign weekly homework and mark each lesson to monitor students' progress.
All sessions will be personalized to support the attainment of students' individual academic goals. I aim to foster a relaxed, positive, patient, and supportive environment in my classes, where each student feels safe, valued, and recognized.
