Illustration and Visual Storytelling Class Information
See our full course description and additional information such as required supplies on our website.
Students will learn how to tell stories through pictures, learn how to use color, value, framing, and other tools to support their work, and gain mastery in pencil, charcoal, and ink mediums. This course will provide basic understandings of the different mediums covered, as well as drawing techniques, to supplement the story-based curriculum. The course goes through the various steps required to make a dynamic, interesting, and focused illustration, and will allow students to experiment with different artistic styles and literary inspirations. Students will learn how to illustrate everything from fairytales to science fiction, adapting scenes from literature and from their own imagination, and will learn how to research and find references for period pieces. The curriculum will go over the creative uses of different mediums and how illustrations are used in different print formats. Students will be held to artistic critique and learn how to discuss and collaborate with others, and be provided with possible uses for these skills in everyday life. Finally, students will be able to develop their own project and work independently for a creative final based on their own interests.
