Description

I strongly believe that comprehensive sexuality education is much more than just accurate information about body parts, functions, reproduction, and how to decrease sex-related risks.  The way that we learn and think about and respect the relationships we have with our own bodies, identities, and values, our freedom to ask questions and receive honest, accurate, and uncensored information, the opportunities to be in discussion about these topics with both peers and adults, witnessing modeling of comfort and positivity around topics of bodies, relationships and sexuality, and the practical tools we learn and practice, will significantly impact the relationships we have with others in our lives, whether platonic or sexual.

I believe that in order to be truly comprehensive in our approach to sexuality education, we need to provide opportunity for all of the above. In this course, which is largely based on the Our Whole Lives curriculum, we will use didactic educational content, videos, interactive activities, discussion questions, guest speaker panels, full length movies, and resource provision in order for students to learn factual information, examine their own values and feelings, practice responding to potential situations, and critically consider their own decision-making for present and future situations with the goal of creating healthy relationships with themselves, others, and their communities throughout the rest of their lives.

The course includes the topics of values, language, reproductive anatomy, puberty, body image, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity, characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships, relationship and communication skills, phone, internet, and social media safety, bullying and bystander intervention, consent, outercourse, masturbation, STIs, contraception, pregnancy and unintended pregnancy options, and sexual decisionmaking and communication.

The entire curriculum will be inclusive of varying sexual orientations, relationship configurations, and gender identities. The curriculum is completely secular and free of specific religious doctrine or reference.

Neurodivergency Specializations and Accommodations

I am a parent of two ND kids and have successfully taught many.

I do not force kids to be on camera, and they may choose to participate via the chat if that is preferred to vocally.

Kids are encouraged to participate at their own comfort level. Those who don't want to read aloud or "perform" role plays in front of the group may opt out.

I use Google Slides and have Zoom captions turned on for folks who have issues with auditory processing, are deaf or hard of hearing, or are helped by visual aids.

Outside of a few journal activities that are meant only for them, there are no ongoing writing assignments, and only occasional, very minimal homework.

In discussions around disability, bullying, bystander intervention, and communication specifically, but in other sessions as well, we discuss the ways that neurodivergence might impact different scenarios, reactions, behaviors, and boundaries.

I have on a couple of occasions allowed a student to be accompanied by a translator for class (I say allowed because this course is generally for students only, without parents, due to our confidentiality agreements).
