Description

I am a fully independent educator running my classes (hosted on Teachable) through my own website.

This class is part of my Middle School Writing Foundations series, which is designed to provide academic writing support for learners who have little or no experience with formal writing assignments.

If your learner is brand new to academic research and using sources in their writing, this is a great place to start practicing foundational research skills.

In this class, we focus on using sources (provided for learners so they can concentrate on using sources rather than finding them) in our writing. We do that through choosing meaningful, relevant direct quotes and learning how to paraphrase fairly and thoroughly.

Gain Key Academic Writing and Reading Foundations

Informative writing is the foundational base for so much research writing across many academic disciplines. Writers need to be able to identify the key information in a source and integrate it smoothly into their own work.

We'll do this through practicing the following:

  • Identifying relevant direct quotes
  • Integrating direct quotes into our own writing
  • Selecting passages to paraphrase
  • Paraphrasing without plagiarism
  • Using in-text citations

Self-Paced Format

This is a self-paced class, which means you can take as much time as you'd like. The suggested schedule is 8 weeks.

Find Individual Processes for Writing

There is no one way to write well. Learners must develop their own strategies and build a toolbox of approaches they can turn to as demands increase over time. This class is designed to focus with intention on the tools used in narrative writing. Writers will get to practice writing their own narratives with multiple drafts, each focused on developing specific elements of a successful narrative.

Supplies: To participate successfully in class, learners will need the following:

  • PDF Reader
  • Headphones or speakers for listening to videos

(Note: There are no required texts to purchase. Learners will receive access to links of class materials.)

Schedule/Time Commitment: Learners can expect to spend 2-3 hours a week working on class materials including reading sample stories, completing activities, and drafting their own narratives.

Pricing Note: This class is offered on a Sliding Fee Scale. The listed price is the market rate, but other options are available.
