âž– Why Study Philosophy?âž–
In the age of information, philosophy is the secret to boosting critical thinking, logical reasoning, problem-solving, and crafting effective communications. It's more than just learning; it's a journey that nurtures curiosity, empathy, and a deep understanding of diverse perspectives. Empower your child to navigate and shape the world with wisdom.
âž– Class Experience âž–
Embark on a journey of wonder and exploration with me as we dive into the philosophical world of Matthew Lipman's book, Kio & Gus. No purchase of the book is necessary! During class, the teacher will share relevant PDFs to foster our discussions. The classroom is a safe space where you can freely express your thoughts, doubts, and questions about profound concepts like the nature of reality, the power of imagination, and what we value. Guided by the teacher, students will reflect on how these ideas relate to their daily lives and explore practical applications in real-world situations.
Students will be on a quest for wisdom, where critical thinking and reasoning skills are sharpened to uncover the mysteries of our fascinating world. In this class, we don't just listen—we actively use the Socratic Method of learning. Our discussions cover thought-provoking topics that inspire students to explore deep philosophical concepts like reality, knowledge, truth, and friendship. By sharing their thoughts in a safe and inclusive space, students are empowered to develop their own values and beliefs confidently.
Circle Of Inquiry:
Together, we form a circle of inquiry where questioning assumptions, analyzing different viewpoints, and exploring ideas are all encouraged in a supportive environment. Through open-ended questions and dialogues, students learn to think about their own thinking—a skill that's valuable in every part of life.
Here are some key aspects of the Socratic Method:
Open-Ended Questions: The questions are designed to spark curiosity and go beyond mere "yes" or "no" responses. They challenge students to think critically, analyze complex ideas, and explore a multitude of possibilities.
Dialogue and Discussion: The Socratic Method is an engaging conversation between a facilitator and the student. In this dynamic exchange, students build on each other's ideas, inspiring new insights and deeper understanding along the way.
Guiding Rather Than Lecturing: Rather than handing out answers, the teacher empowers students to uncover solutions independently. This method encourages learners to cultivate their own thought processes and hone their problem-solving abilities.
Exploration of Concepts: The Socratic method shines brightest when delving into abstract concepts, tackling ethical dilemmas, and breaking down complex issues into understandable information.
Synopsis of Kio & Gus: At Kio's grandparents' farm, he strikes up a friendship with his neighbor Gus. Each chapter introduces new adventures, like Kio's grandfather's tales of meeting a whale from his seafaring days. Throughout the book, Kio and Gus engage in conversations that explore the mysteries of animals, people, and the world around them.
