âž– Why Study Philosophy?âž–

Every day, the world presents us with countless choices, urging us to use the age-old tool of logic. Have you ever wondered why some decisions just seem to make more sense than others? In our class, we'll explore real-life scenarios—from school dilemmas (yes, even in homeschool settings!) to friendship dramas—and equip you with the tools to make informed choices.Through our insightful class discussions learners are empowered to make analyze and navigate social media posts, advertisements, political campaign speeches, and news articles.

âž– What to Expect âž–

Each week we will explore a different situation using the book Harry Stottlemeir's Discovery by Matthew Lipman. (No purchase necessary-the teacher will utilize screen sharing to read the relevant sections in class). Each chapter will be a springboard for our Socratic discussions.

Our discussions will follow the students thoughts and ideas. The learners get to steer the conversation direction and explore what they are interested in most.

What's on the skills lineup, you ask?

• Inferring – check!

• Inductive reasoning – check!

• Ethics – check!

• and more!

Our Circle of Inquiry:

In our class, every idea is valued and thoroughly examined. A student-centered environment where the teacher facilitates discussions rather than imposing their own views. Students will share their thoughts in a non-judgmental space characterized by trust and respect. This approach empowers students, builds confidence, and encourages open sharing of ideas.

Small Class Size: Enhanced Engagement!

The number of philosophers in class is capped at 8. This small class size ensures that everyone has ample opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas, fostering a dynamic and interactive learning environment.

Class Preview:

Warm Up: Introductions and thought-provoking questions: Think of something smelly? Is it good smelly or stinky smelly? Why?

Exploring Ideas: Round Robin discussion facilitated by your teacher, unpacking those deep philosophical concepts together.

Closing:  Reflection and Goodbyes. Learners leave filled with new perspectives and ideas to ponder.
