Description
This class meets 1:1 over Zoom.
During this 1:1 class, your learner and I will use shared reading to complete a chapter book of their choosing with teacher recommendations provided.
Depending on the book and learner, we could complete a short chapter book in as few as two classes. A more advanced book requires numerous classes to complete.
As a Certified Science of Reading Specialist, a homeschooling parent x4 and a literacy tutor.. reading is my passion! Some of my students share my passion for books while others aren't quite there yet. Whether your learner is just dipping their toe into chapter books, is reluctant and intimidated by "all the words!" in chapter books, or is an older reader that struggles with comprehension, this class is for you.
Reading out loud with an engaged, friendly and experienced tutor will help your learner with developing or strengthening their own love of reading.
During our first class, we will get to know each other while I assess your learner's current reading level. Based upon their level and expressed interests, I will make a few suggestions following the class.
Ultimately, it is up the learner's parents to choose & vet our book for content. I recommend using the website Common Sense Media.
The book must be chosen, communicated with the teacher, and brought to our second class together. Please wait for our second class to begin reading it!
I ask that your learner is reading the book for the first time so we can have fun making predictions together. Skills incorporated seamlessly into our lessons:
- Making predictions
- Accurate reading, with gentle and effective assistance on errors
- Summarizing
- Identifying themes and characters
- Critiquing, would we have made the same choice if we were the author/characters?
- Making connections to real life
- Supplemental activities to particular stories, when available
Neurodivergency Specializations and Accommodations
I am the homeschooling parent of four children, several of whom are neurodiverse. The neurodiversities in my home(school) include Autism, ADHD, Auditory Processing Disorder and Intellectual Disability. My classes are not "one size fits all" and are highly accommodating with emphasis on parent input and feedback. I strive to learn who each student learns best.
