This engaging speech class goes beyond typical public speaking training. While students will learn to manage their anxiety, organize their thoughts, and connect with an audience, they will also study nearly 40 speeches by renowned orators, analyze excerpts of impactful speeches, and practice reading key sections aloud. Students will explore techniques used by great communicators such as Ronald Reagan, Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Patrick Henry, Billy Graham, as well as Martin Luther, Sojourner Truth, and Ben Franklin. This course is particularly valuable for students who have never spoken in public, as well as those involved in speech and debate.
Throughout the class, students will write and deliver three speeches: a self-introduction, an informative speech about a hero, and a persuasive speech. They will need to present their speeches live in class or record themselves speaking in front of at least four people, with the recordings shared for the teacher and classmates to view. Additionally, the informative or persuasive speech must be delivered to an audience in the student's community, with the location decided by the student and their parents before the final week of class. Finally, students will collaborate in small groups to complete a project focused on a notable communicator.
