Beginner ukulele students can to take this 30 session course on how to finger-pick and strum their ukulele. Videos will be approximately 20 minutes each. We will be using the Hal Leonard Ukulele Method Book 1 (link at the bottom of this class description), which should be purchased by the students before class begins.
No prior knowledge is required. Students should have a soprano (small), concert (medium) or baritone (large) 4-string ukulele to use for all classes.
In this class, students will learn the history of the ukulele, basic music symbols (such as rhythms, note names and note values) picking, strumming and chords.
After learning the basics of how to hold and tune their ukulele, students will learn to pick a variety of songs, such as Beethoven's "Ode to Joy", the folk song "Oh! Susanna" and traditional songs like "Aura Lee" and "Amazing Grace".
Next students will learn to strum 13 different chords. They will also learn various strum patterns, such as the "waltz strum", "finger and thumb strum", the "single roll stroke" and "tremolo".
Lastly, the students will learn to strum a variety of songs, such as "Au Claire de la Lune", "Shave and a Haircut", "Doo-Wop Uke" and "The Haunted Uke Blues".
I will use flash cards, audio/video recordings and PowerPoint slides as I teach various concepts.
Since practice is an important part of learning an instrument, I recommend that students practice 15 minutes, 4 days per week for a total of 60 minutes of practice per week. Practice logs will be provided.
I have taught this curriculum in school settings for 10+ years. I am passionate about music and look forward to teaching you to play their ukulele!
Ukulele 102 will also be available upon completion of Ukulele 101!
