Description
Students will have the opportunity to learn about and evaluate the five major religions of the world based on their history, beliefs, and practices through video lessons.
This is a self-paced course, meaning that you work at your own pace.
It is meant to provide students with an overview of each of the main religions in the order in which they were founded (Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam). Students will also have the opportunity to explore an additional major world religion.
The following will be taught each week that a new faith is covered:
-When and where it was founded
-Who was the founder(s), how it was established, as well as other important people
-Name of their deity or deities
-Holy book(s)
-Core beliefs
-Holy place(s)
-Practices and laws
-Holiday(s) and why and when they are celebrated
The main focus of the class is that of developing a multi-cultural appreciation of the different beliefs, practices, and histories of the religious groups that people belong to. Students will have the opportunity to share their own take-aways while comparing and contrasting each religion. It is hoped that students will understand that many people while practicing different religions and believing different things, have more in common than previously thought.
The course will be broken down as follows:
