Description
This is the private lesson version of my ongoing Country Studies class. Every week, we study the Physical and Human Geography of one country, with an emphasis on Physical Geography.
CONTACT ME HERE, TO GET A $30 COUPON!
This week, we are learning about KUWAIT! Please scroll down to see upcoming countries.
Each lesson is bespoke and created on Nearpod.
The lessons focus primarily on physical geography with lots of map work. Depending on the country, we may also learn about one or more of the following topics: Government, History, Economics, Linguistics, Culture, Ethnicity, Religion, Flora & Fauna, Current Events, Food, etc.
This is in a presentation format that includes slides, maps, short videos, and discussions. I strongly encourage questions and discussions. Students are invited every week to research the following week's country and share their findings in class. Some students create slides which I incorporate into my lessons.
It is expected that the students know their compass directions. N, E, S, W!
Students are encouraged to communicate with me before the lessons and tell me what their greatest specific interests are about upcoming countries so I may incorporate their interests into the lessons.

Neurodivergency Specializations and Accommodations
Please note I am not a certified Special Education teacher, although I have taken several master's level courses in Special Education. As a former inclusion teacher, I have had much experience with special education students where I worked hand-in-hand with a Special Education teacher in my classroom.
In the 1990's, here in Texas, I was proud to be one of the very few Regular Ed teachers who fought for the inclusion of Special Ed students into the regular ed classrooms.
At this time approximately 25% of my students on Outschool are classified as neurodivergent. I have three ND students who have been with me for 3+ years - All three are autistic.
I am a former unschooling mother of twin sons, both with special health needs - Type 1 Diabetes & Leukemia (JMML)
One son was diagnosed as neurodivergent on several levels (ADHD, Anxiety, Dyslexia & Dysgraphia)
ADHD - I provide clear and concise instructions. Even though there is variety in the lessons because each country has a different focus, there is a structured routine that many students appreciate. There's variety, but also a routine.
ANXIETY - I create a calm and supportive learning environment. I provide opportunities for private communication after class. This often happens naturally and organically with the student taking the lead. In class, I am patient and provide reassurance when the students feel challenged. I remind them often to "Not worry if you get it wrong... we'll do it together when I share my screen."
AUTISM - There is a clear and consistent routine that we follow every week. The lesson is predictable and there is repetition from week to week. I give the students extra time to process information. I create a supportive, friendly, and understanding environment.
DYSGRAPHIA - I give students tips on how to accommodate their dysgraphia. When we are labeling the maps, I often advise my students to label using the numbers from their map locations list instead of writing out the names. It goes faster and they can transcribe the numbers after class at their leisure.
DYSLEXIA - My lessons are presented in multiple formats via the Nearpod slides. The slides include text, lots of maps, and diagrams. All lessons also include videos which, of course, include audio. I offer tips such as substituting numbers for the name labeling on the maps. I am patient and give my students the time they need to complete their tasks.
