Private Peaceful is the stunning classic novel of love and war from Michael Morpurgo, beloved and bestselling author of War Horse Told in the voice of Private Tommo Peaceful, the story follows twenty-four hours at the front, and captures his memories of his family and his village life - by no means as tranquil as it appeared.
Full of vivid detail and engrossing atmosphere, leading to a dramatic and moving conclusion, Private Peaceful is both a compelling love story and a deeply moving account of the First World War.
This book is about war, and some students may shed a tear or two. It is up to the responsible adult to be aware of this content. I have taught it to many and it has always been a popular read.
Students will need to have their own copy of the book. Each week we will explore learning activities, comprehension questions and challenges as we learn more about the book.
Required reading (can be listened to via audio book on youtube) will be set in between lessons.
Neurodivergency Specializations and Accommodations
I am passionate about helping teens strengthen core skills to succeed. This can often mean applying the content and skills often covered in lower-grade levels, allowing teens to develop skills and confidence by meeting them where they are.
I focus on building confidence and foundational skills in a nurturing and empowering environment. I help teens master core concepts, overcome academic challenges, and develop a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom.
At the heart of my teaching philosophy lies a belief that learning should be an adventure, sprinkled with curiosity. We can be serious about learning without it always being too serious.
I am a teacher who welcomes all students exactly as they are. I have a lot of experience with neurodivergent children and am a neurodivergent adult myself. Cameras can be turned off if preferred (after a quick hello with the camera on).
When appropriate, I create 'low-demand' classroom experiences, which can work especially well with learners experiencing anxiety or those with PDA. I encourage and welcome participation, but am very quick to adapt to learners who are unable or unwilling to partake in an obvious and active manner. This can mean only using the chat, or even only listening.
