Description
This class will develop reading and comprehension skills across a range of texts. The class is for teens aged 13-16, while the content is from work traditionally set across grades 5-7.
Learners will read the text out loud, taking in turns. This allows them to develop their confidence and skill when reading out loud. If a learner is less confident, they can read less. This is such a great skill to develop. No student will be called upon if they are uncomfortable sharing.
The text will be presented on screen and also provided as a printable PDF. Learners will answer some comprehension questions during the class, sharing their answers with each other.
We will also discuss the text itself, in addition to the comprehension questions. Questions will be either completed in the chat box, annotated on the screen or typed into whiteboard.fi.
I am a very supportive teacher, and work to create an atmosphere of bravery and giving things a try. No one is put under pressure. Cameras can be off if needed.
Neurodivergency Specializations and Accommodations
I focus on building confidence and foundational skills in a nurturing and empowering environment. I help teens master core concepts, overcome academic challenges, and develop a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom.
At the heart of my teaching philosophy lies a belief that learning should be an adventure, sprinkled with curiosity. We can be serious about learning without it always being too serious.
I am a teacher who welcomes all students exactly as they are. I have a lot of experience with neurodivergent children and am a neurodivergent adult myself. Cameras can be turned off if preferred (after a quick hello with the camera on).
When appropriate, I create 'low-demand' classroom experiences, which can work especially well with learners experiencing anxiety or those with PDA. I encourage and welcome participation, but am very quick to adapt to learners who are unable or unwilling to partake in an obvious and active manner. This can mean only using the chat, or even only listening.
