Do you have a struggling writer? A student who experiences anxiety about writing or even one who dislikes it altogether?
Writing is an essential skill across all academic subjects, career fields, and in our social and spiritual lives. This course is designed to help high school students enhance their academic writing skills and build their confidence as writers.
Students will learn strategies to overcome writer’s block and writing anxiety, organize their thoughts, and effectively edit and revise their work. The course begins with crafting well-structured sentences, progresses to organizing those sentences into coherent paragraphs, and ultimately leads to composing multi-paragraph essays, including those that incorporate outside sources.
Throughout the course, students will review relevant grammar concepts and complete writing assignments each week on a variety of engaging topics, with ample guidance and encouragement. Recognizing that each student’s writing challenges are unique, instruction will be tailored to foster individual growth. While creativity has its place in writing, this is not a creative writing course. Additionally, though instruction is personalized, it is not intended as private tutoring. By the end of this course, students will be well-prepared for advanced writing in all content areas.
**SPECIAL NOTE:** Before the first day of class, students must submit a writing sample of at least 150 words, typed and double-spaced. The topic can be either fiction or nonfiction, but it must be the student's original work, unedited by anyone else. Quotations from other sources should not be included. This sample will help the teacher assess each writer’s strengths and weaknesses, allowing for tailored instruction to meet individual needs. An honest and accurate representation of the student’s best independent work is crucial.
