Intended for a long-term commitment.

Assessments

Students are assessed during the first class to get an idea of strengths and weaknesses. Students will be assessed informally during each class, which will “drive” instruction/homework. 

Lessons Goals

Students will gain strategies, learn rules about patterns and grammar....in which to develop and/or strengthen skills in reading and spelling, as well as reading comprehension, and reading and writing fluency skills. It will also provide learners with practice for oral reading and oral language development.

Orton-Gillingham

“Phonemic Awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in spoken words and the understanding that spoken words and syllables are made up of sequences of speech sounds”(Yopp, 1992; see References).

•Reading, spelling, and writing instruction for people with dyslexia and other learning disabilities, English Language Learners. 

Lessons

Each class will begin with oral/auditory warm-ups with a focus on listening identifying phonemes and sounds, for sounds in words, identifying sound/phoneme placement, and similarities and differences between words. 

Each class will be a cumulative review of past spelling and language rules and phonemes from previous classes, in addition to new material. 

Students will practice reading and spelling words from previous weeks. They will read passages with review and new patterns, and answer related questions . Sentences with review and new patterns will be dictated to learners for spelling and sentence writing practice.  

New material will be presented during each class. However, the pace is based on student needs and grasp of material. Students will be assessed initially and through observation during class time. 

Materials 

Handouts (Student Recording Sheets) will be provided before each class. 

A printer for weekly printouts for each lesson. A 3-ring binder or folder for each lesson for future reference. (A notebook to write lessons in if choosing not to print handouts.)

Pencil. 

Tactile surface: sandpaper, sponge, any textured surface. 

Homework 

Option of homework upon request. 

Policies

Payment and Cancellation Policy

  • Fees: $40/30 minutes, $70/55 minutes.
  • $50 non-refundable deposit due at enrollment to hold agreed upon time, and will be put towards first class.
  • Payment is due before class begins.
  • Alphabetic Principles requires 24 hours notice for cancellations. Payment will be put towards the next class.
  • Otherwise under 24 hours, payment goes towards cancelled or missed class.
  • If student has not logged in by 10 minutes after the start of the class, the teacher will log out. Payment is non-refundable.
  • We understand that things come up or technology doesn't work, but no shows will be considered the same as cancellation.
  • Alphabetic Principles requires 2 weeks notice of discontinuation of services as a courtesy.
