This is a fun ongoing class to encourage creative writing and to learn new vocabulary words. You can jump into this class at any time and stay for as long as it fits your schedule.
This writing class is designed to give writers more specific direction as they continue to improve their skills. Writing style progresses and comes to life through using various figures of speech and other writing elements. We will work on being more descriptive and detail-oriented in our written work as we learn about and use these valuable writing topics and resources.
After we discuss the meaning of the weekly writing topic, learn any new vocabulary words, and brainstorm examples together, we will discuss how we can incorporate these lessons into our writing. Students will realize the importance that these literary elements can have in their writing. Using various writing elements can enhance or describe their stories, improve the quality of writing, and also make a difference in how students develop their skills as an author.
Students should come prepared with a notebook or paper on which to take notes and write stories.
Since this is an ongoing class, and does not build on previous material, students may join the class on any given week without feeling behind in their learning. We love to have new learners become part of the class at any time.
Class schedule: Each week students will be taught a new literary element, figure of speech, or writing technique. Students should come prepared with a notebook or paper on which to write their new vocabulary words and definitions, as well as their stories. Students may also choose to use a device and type their work instead of writing by hand.
Students will be given a choice of 2-3 different writing prompts or ideas, but may choose to use their own ideas instead if they prefer. They will select the topic that they would like to write about and begin their writing adventures.
Near the end of class, learners will have the opportunity to share their stories and build their public speaking skills, helping students become more confident in this area. No one will be required to share, but may choose to do so if they would like encouragement, advice, or applause.
