Description
Film as Literature- FALL Class Information
See our full course description and additional information such as required supplies on our website.
In this dynamic and engaging class, students will learn to analyze key elements such as theme, character, plot, setting, point of view, conflict, mood, tone, irony, foreshadowing, flashbacks, symbolism, motifs, and more. They will also examine cinematic techniques like lighting, cinematography, sound, and editing. The selected films span various genres, themes, and time periods, providing a rich foundation for analysis.
By studying literary elements through film, students often find it easier to recognize and evaluate these concepts in traditional literary texts. This course not only prepares them for future literature classes in high school and college but also cultivates critical thinking skills that make them more discerning consumers of media.
In class, students will engage in guided note-taking as they explore each literary and cinematic element. They will watch and discuss short films and clips to practice their analytical skills. Outside of class, they will analyze full-length films and participate in lively discussions.
While this class does not require formal papers, students will complete three projects—one of which can be a paper if they choose.
