How NatureGlo's Marine Biology Unit Study Began?
When I was 8 years old, I became enthralled by the Jacques Cousteau television series. My grandpa Teddy gave me a hardback book by Jacques featuring his seafaring explorations of the ocean in his famous ship, Calipso. That same year I was failing second grade math. My teacher, Mrs. Thompson, passed back to me a math paper covered in red X's. For the first time, I felt the shivers of fear as I looked down at all of those glaring red X's.
That weekend, I created my first ever unit study. I cut out tiny pieces of paper and taped them together to create three tiny little booklets that I still have in my possession. I drew tiny mermaids (not inspired from Jacques Couteau), whales, and marine fish throughout the pages inspired by the marine life I had seen in Jacques Cousteau's shows and book. I added various second grade math problems to my marine life illustrated pages. I colored them in. I called them my Ocean life math books. I incorporated writing, math, and art without realizing that I had self-directed my very own first unit study.

Those Marine life inspired booklets were the seeds that later gave birth to me creating the Marine Biology Online Unit Study that we see today. After thousands of learners have come through this content, I bring to you the latest revision, a self-paced on-demand online course that's simple and fun to navigate.

What's Included in NatureGlo's Marine Biology Online Unit Study
NatureGlo's Marine Biology Online Unit Study is composed of four 6-lesson courses, two 3-lesson mini courses, and one 4-lesson course. All content is held on NatureGlo's website and courseware called Groove.cm. GrooveMember, an app of Groove.cm houses the online course content. Lesson progress is tracked. Content can be spread over an entire homeschool year with the option for summer homeschooling.

Student Certificate of Completion
Each of the seven online homeschool science courses includes a student certificate of completion for parent recordkeeping.
NatureGlo's Marine Biology Online Unit Study Course Format
Each lesson is guided by a pre-recorded PowerPoint lesson with NatureGlo. There is a student study guide per lesson which students can fill out during each video lesson. Lessons include Quizlet games allowing students to play digital online through a platform called Quizlet to help them remember content.

Neurodivergency Specializations and Accommodations
I have received feedback from parents of children with autism doing well in my Marine Biology courses. There are no compulsory tests or quizzes making it easier for neurodivergent learners to digest content without the stress of testing, grading (unless parents choose to grade student work) and unnecessary busywork as homework. Additionally, because learners can go at their own pace, they can take as much or as little time as they need to move through the course content.
I had one autistic learner with dysgraphia that faithfully completed each lesson's study guide and journal pages. There was plenty of room for the learner to write in big letters to communicate their learning.
