The invention of the airplane just over a century ago has profoundly transformed our lives. Reflecting on how far we’ve come in such a short time is truly remarkable. Today, we have pilots operating from a module in Nevada, remotely flying missions and engaging targets in Iraq, while massive cargo planes land on dirt runways in remote parts of Africa.
This course explores the incredible journey of manned flight, beginning with the story of the Wright Brothers and extending through the past hundred years to examine the people, places, and events that propelled aviation advancements. While much of the focus will be on military aircraft, given the significant changes driven by wartime innovations, we will also delve into commercial aviation, exploring the early airline industry and its evolution into a fast, safe, and reliable mode of travel.
