See our full course description and additional information such as required supplies on our website.
This introductory class is for students interested in journalism. They will explore the differences between hard news, feature stories, and opinion writing in both print and digital formats. Students will write all three types of articles, plus a letter-to-the-editor, while examining articles from local newspapers and assigned readings. They will learn AP style, Inverted Pyramid structure, crafting leads, using quotes, writing headlines, and understanding decks. The course also covers media bias and teaches students to be discerning news consumers. Students will be expected to read a local newspaper (print or digital) and interview at least two people—one for a hard news article and one for a feature story. Additionally, they will study grammar essentials, journalism editing, and basic online research skills.
