Description

In this 10 week course, students will delve into the collection of short stories called "Flying Lessons and Other Stories" edited by Ellen Oh. This anthology contains stories that are not only humorous and engaging but also resonate with middle school-aged students. What makes this anthology even more special is its diverse authors and characters, offering readers a rich variety of perspectives and experiences to explore.

Each week, students will explore one short story from the book. Prior to reading, they'll engage in a pre-reading activity, followed by an exploration of vocabulary encountered during the story. Comprehension questions will prompt reflection on the narrative, and specific inquiries will align with middle school-level English standards.

Students will receive one lesson per week with posts labeled Monday-Friday. There is a task for students to complete each day of the week.

Monday- Students will respond to a pre-reading question. They may also start reading the short story for the week on Mondays.

Tuesday- Students will receive a video overviewing the week's story and worksheets. The week's worksheets will also be attached to this post. Students should finish reading the story for the week. Students should submit their worksheets by 5:00pm Thursday.

Wednesday- Students will see a post with a vocabulary game aimed at reinforcing the week's vocabulary words. It will instantly check their work and provide feedback.

Thursday- Students will engage with a discussion question and will be encouraged to record their response for submission to the teacher. While typing responses is always an option for those uncomfortable with recording, this exercise serves as valuable speaking practice. Responses should be submitted to the teacher no later than 5:00 PM on Friday.

Friday- Students will receive a quiz containing story comprehension and vocabulary questions.

I am typically quick to response to student messages. Even when busy, I will respond within 36 hours to student work submissions.

This course is hosted on Outschool.
