Description

"X enjoyed your class in spite of their best efforts, which is an amazing reflection on you." - Parent feedback for this class.

"A farm is taken over by its overworked, mistreated animals. With flaming idealism and stirring slogans, they set out to create a paradise of progress, justice, and equality. Thus the stage is set for one of the most telling satiric fables ever penned –a razor-edged fairy tale for grown-ups that records the evolution from revolution against tyranny to a totalitarianism just as terrible. When Animal Farm was first published, Stalinist Russia was seen as its target. Today it is devastatingly clear that wherever and whenever freedom is attacked, under whatever banner, the cutting clarity and savage comedy of George Orwell’s masterpiece have a meaning and message still ferociously fresh."

Animal Farm is a classic novella, one that has always proved popular with the teenagers that have studied it alongside me. It questions authority and power in a way that feels as relevant today as when it was written in 1945.

In this 10 week book study, learners will meet once a week. We will read the book a chapter at a time together. We will pause, repeat, question and interrupt while we dive into the words and their impact.

No learner will have to read out loud if they do not want to.The book contains 10 chapters, and we will read one chapter a week.

There is no outside lesson-time reading required, although optional additional non-fiction reading may be offered when relevant.

Each lesson will focus on enjoying, understanding and diving into the themes of Animal Farm.

Neurodivergency Specializations and Accommodations

I focus on building confidence and foundational skills in a nurturing and empowering environment. I help teens master core concepts, overcome academic challenges, and develop a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom.

At the heart of my teaching philosophy lies a belief that learning should be an adventure, sprinkled with curiosity. We can be serious about learning without it always being too serious.

I am a teacher who welcomes all students exactly as they are. I have a lot of experience with neurodivergent children and am a neurodivergent adult myself. Cameras can be turned off if preferred (after a quick hello with the camera on).

When appropriate, I create 'low-demand' classroom experiences, which can work especially well with learners experiencing anxiety or those with PDA. I encourage and welcome participation, but am very quick to adapt to learners who are unable or unwilling to partake in an obvious and active manner. This can mean only using the chat, or even only listening.
