Writing papers is an essential aspect of academia, and mastering this skill is crucial for success in any field of study. It’s not enough to simply craft a thesis statement and strong topic sentences; students must also effectively incorporate outside sources to develop their ideas. While many students may feel anxious about the prospect of writing a research paper, there is no need for concern!
This introductory course is designed to help students practice and refine the skills needed to conduct, manage, and present research. Adopting a step-by-step approach, the course starts with guided research and progressively builds towards the completion of a comprehensive research paper. The instructor acts as a writing coach, providing support and guidance throughout the process.
Students will learn to select a topic, formulate a thesis, conduct research using both primary and secondary sources, evaluate sources critically, use notecards effectively, edit drafts, and compile documentation. The course also covers the fundamentals of plagiarism—its consequences and how to avoid it. Students will gain proficiency in the latest MLA style, receive practice with APA style, and get an introduction to Chicago style. By the end of the semester, students will have completed three types of research papers (informative, persuasive, and comparative) and an annotated bibliography.
