Description

Come join me for art play! Let's explore art materials together in a community of young artists!

WHAT IS THIS CLASS ABOUT?

In this ongoing class, a maximum of 6 young artists gather together with me, make art, and share with friends! This is a more free-form class - nothing step-by-step. Learners will be exploring art materials in a carefree way, in a group setting. (The fun exploration of line & watercolor wash in the class listing was created by a 4yo artist in class.) It's about developing facility with art materials as they maintain the agency to make their own artistic choices!

Over a period of many months we will cover watercolor, drawing, collage, paper sculpture, & sculpture using play-doh and pipe cleaners. We usually work on each medium for a period of 4-6 weeks, then rotate back through.

WHAT WILL LEARNERS DO IN A TYPICAL CLASS SESSION?

After a quick greeting, I'll suggest an idea for the day, and will often suggest or demo a use of materials (eg, mixing colors). After that, we'll spend 15-20 minutes working, and and if we haven't been sharing throughout, which often happens, we'll spend 5 minutes or so at the end sharing with classmates (I never force sharing, but strive to create an environment where all learners feel comfortable enough to do so). When artists share, I try to point out different aspects of their artwork, so they'll be picking up art terms as we go.

Although I'll use a document camera to demo and create art along with them, sometimes I turn off my document camera because I don't want them to feel like they should be copying me - there is no 'right way' to make art in this class.
