Secular Curriculum
Owner and Educator at
Equipped for Writing
Greetings! I'm Karen Cross, a certified teacher from Maryland. I earned a Master's degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment from Walden University in 2007. Teaching in the public school setting for five years as a special educator (with a focus in autism) taught me valuable skills, not only as a teacher, but as a parent as well. I saw early on in my career how crucial parents are to the success of their children's education.
After having two children of my own, I became a stay-at-home mom, and eventually began homeschooling after our fourth child was born. This method of education opened my eyes to even more learning opportunities and approaches to education. Creating an individualized plan for each of my children was something I gave extensive thought to each year, and was able to choose curriculum accordingly.
It also led me to my philosophy of education that every learner brings their own unique talents, interests, and background to the class. Recognizing that and capitalizing on it, I created activities that engaged and fostered interaction that is respectful of all. By adapting curriculum, I was able to develop a plan that fit learning styles by differentiating instruction and evaluation.
I chose different routes each year based on my children's needs and goals. I learned about Charlotte Mason and living books, narration, and love for the outdoors. That led me to the Institute for Excellence in Writing® , otherwise known as IEW®. The method made so much sense because it looked like Charlotte Mason, but in easy to follow steps and curriculum I could follow easily.
I bought the training and eventually became a Registered Instructor and then a Certified Instructor (a title I hold today). I launched my own online writing business, Equipped for Writing, where I've tailored my online courses around the IEW model. I quickly realized how easy it was to differentiate instruction, even using a structured curriculum with a specific pathway. IEW makes that process seamless, and I incorporate that into all of my classes.
While grading can be an important part of the learning process, I tend to place more importance on the process, not the product, especially at the beginning. Learners should grow with each assignment and be able to apply what they are learning in class more easily and readily each week. Expectations increase with experience and age.
Parents play a pivotal role in their children's success, especially in the homeschool setting. My door is always open for a parent to ask questions and work with me on adjusting instruction to meet the needs of their learner.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy watching my kids play sports, reading, going on walks with our dog, family movie nights, and indulging in crocheting.
I look forward to serving you!
